A box of chocolate is the most successful gift ever invented — but only when it's chosen well. The wrong box arrives stale, crushed, or too sweet. The right box opens in the recipient's hand like a small theatrical scene: paper that unfolds in three movements, a smell of cocoa before the first piece, and a flavour that lasts beyond the bite. This guide is for anyone choosing chocolate as a gift in Amsterdam — for one person, for ten people, or for the hundred guests of a hotel opening. Written from a working atelier that delivers, hand-delivers and on-site builds gift boxes daily.
A first-time gift to a colleague: a small (six-piece) box of assorted bonbons, around (by inquiry) with a hand-written note slipped into the lid. A romantic gift: a twelve-piece box that mixes pralines with two cream truffles, around (by inquiry) ideally hand-delivered the day before. A host gift for a dinner party: a single-origin bar plus a four-piece praline box, around (by inquiry) that fits cleanly in a coat pocket. A bereavement or thank-you: a twelve-piece dark-chocolate-only box, neutral wrapping, no ribbon. Each of these is available in the collection at Amsterdam Chocolate Factory and can be assembled while you wait if you walk in.
Wedding favours need to do three things: travel without melting, be edible by everyone (no nuts where possible, or labelled clearly), and look better than the rest of the centrepiece. The standard wedding favour from a chocolate atelier is a two-piece sealed box, branded with the couple's monogram on the lid. Order quantity matters: minimum 50 boxes, ideally six weeks lead time, with a tasting session two months ahead. Budget: (by inquiry) per favour for a 2-piece, (by inquiry) for a 4-piece. Delivery is to the venue, the morning of the wedding, in a cooled van.
Corporate gifting works best when you avoid the obvious: branded boxes that look like marketing material end up at the back of a colleague's desk. The boxes that get opened and remembered are co-branded subtly, with the company logo embossed in a single colour on the inside of the lid, not the outside. Custom box runs start at 24 units, with a 10-working-day lead time. Larger runs (200+) get to a 4-week lead time. Add an internal flavour card if you want the box to feel personal — origin notes for a single-origin bar make any corporate gift feel less corporate.
Amsterdam Chocolate Factory supplies several hotels and restaurants in the centrum with turn-down chocolates, after-dinner pralines, and welcome-amenity gift cards. Standard formats: a 1-piece printed envelope ((by inquiry) per unit, MOQ 200), a 2-piece sealed box ((by inquiry) per unit, MOQ 100), and a 6-piece branded box for welcome gifts ((by inquiry) per unit, MOQ 50). Chocolate is heat-sensitive: above 22°C it softens, above 25°C it loses its temper, above 30°C it melts. Most courier services don't refrigerate, so summer delivery is the hardest. We arrange delivery courier delivery in the Netherlands using a cooled courier and scheduled delivery across the EU using insulated packaging with a single ice pack. We don't delivers outside the EU directly — the risk of customs delay and heat exposure is too high — but we'll wrap any order for hand-carry on a flight at no extra cost.
Our best-selling gift box is the 'Twelve Houses' — a hand-built twelve-piece selection that includes three single-origin pralines, three seasonal flavour pralines, three cream truffles and three painted bonbons. (by inquiry) in a hinged box with a black velvet ribbon. Visitors most often buy it as a host gift; locals most often buy it as a birthday gift. It's been our number-one seller for four years running.
A 12-piece assorted gift box ((by inquiry)) is the most popular all-purpose gift. Single-origin bars ((by inquiry)) travel best for international flights. Wedding favours, corporate gifts and hotel amenities can all be custom-built — minimum quantities apply.
