Dam Square is full of mass-market chocolate windows. The nearest atelier where the chocolate is actually made by hand is a 12-minute walk south, at Leidsestraat 87. Worth the walk if you want a real gift to take home rather than a souvenir.

Most of them sell industrial bars rebranded for tourists, at tourist prices. The chocolate inside is rarely made anywhere near Amsterdam. A 12-minute walk gets you to a real chocolatier.
Walk south down Rokin past the Royal Palace's eastern side. Turn right onto Heiligeweg, cross Spui, continue through Koningsplein onto Leidsestraat. Around 12 minutes total.
